Ranch dressing

Ranch dressing

Continuing in our regular foods program, I wanted to share my fresh ranch recipe. Ranch dressing is an american food-ism that I didn't understand until I made it myself from scratch. The tang really comes through with fresh ingredients, and you will really want to put it almost anything. If you become the ranch enthusiast that I have become, it's really quite easy to whip some up with little notice. As long as you keep these herbs freeze-dried and on hand, the non-perishables in stock, the only ingredients you'll have to pick up are buttermilk and lemon. Put this on your frozen pizza tonight!

What you'll need (makes three cups)

  • Two cups buttermilk
  • One cup mayonnaise
  • 1/2 tsp ground mustard seed
  • 2 tbsp parsley
  • 2 tsp chives
  • 1 tsp dill
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • Paprika to taste
  • Juice from half of one lemon

Mix the buttermilk with the mayo together until thoroughly combined. Then add the rest of the ingredients and stir. Keeps for one week if refrigerated and covered.
